In this post I wil explain how to build a DIY spiderbox, I got the idea from Ben’s Worx, youtube channel.
I used 12mm plywood for the box and 3.6mm plywood for the lid. The box measures 14,5cmx12,5cmx10cm.
What do you need?
- 12mm Plywood
- 3.6mm Plywood
- Plastic spider or a 3D printer
- Piece of metal (clothhanger)
- broomstick
- Table saw or a jigsaw or something similar
- string
- duct tape
- woodglue
- Paint (optional)
- Long nail or a piece of strong round metal (I cut of a old screwdriver)
- hotglue
No table saw? 🙁
With a table saw it is easy to cut the slot where the lid can slide through. You can achieve this without a table saw as well. See the picture below (screencapture from Ben’s video)
The inside of the box
I cut of a piece of my broomstick (the round top I used as a knob to open the lid) I drilled a hole, of center, through the length of the broomstick to accommodate the nail. The nail is fitted in two small holes between the two inside side walls. You also need to drill a hole for the piece of cloth hanger. This hole is drilled through the middle of the piece of broomstick. Be sure it is a tide fit. Fit the spider with some hotglue on the top of the cloth hanger. Attach the piece of rope to the cloth hanger close to the broomstick. Bend the cloth hanger in such a way, that if you pull the rope, the spider comes out and clears the lid.
Pulling the string
You need to attach the piece of sting at the bottom and the front of the lid. If you open the lid the spider should come out and won’t touch the lid. You have to bend the cloth hanger in such a way that you reach that goal.
The spider
I 3d printed the spider in white PLA. I put the spider in boiling water so I could bend the legs for a more realistic spider. To finish it of, I painted the spider black.
The knob
Now you can attach the knob to the lid with some woodglue or a screw (that’s what I did)

Now everything is working you can prime and paint your box
